duppi - velvet night (1986)

 duppi - velvet night (1986)
unfortunately, there isn't much about duppi (pronounced "dappi") apart from a very sparse discogs entry, but what we do know is that her only release, velvet night is a haunting & beautiful piece of work. fronted by mizue ikeuchi (ๆฑ ๅ†…ใฟใšใ‚‘). velvet night was released by independent osaka label, night gallery, which focuses on japanese goth and new wave and then pivots to corny heavy medal? (includes favorites like all girl band, oxz and the elusive yoran). yasushi utsunomia is credited as the engineer & producer, who has worked with other excellent female fronted projects such as after dinner & shonen knifeikeuchi makes a few appearances, like this rare experimental compilation album in a track called "it's alive." it's super gorgeous & sonically jarring, this particular track makes me wish that she'd release more music. it's such a shame that we only have a single and a few appearances here and there. ikeuchi does show up in a short lived band called reform (if anyone has a link to this release, i'd be eternally grateful, i have yet to listen to it.) back to velvet night--it's something of a dirge, starting off with atonal & dissonant keys coupled with ikeuchi whispery delivery. sudden percussive elements show up with the banging of drums & shrill bowing of violins. side b's "ใฏใคใญใคใฎใฟใ‚„ใ“" really illustates utsunomia's production that matches more in the style of his work with after dinner's haco with a pulsating synth that runs through the entire track only to end with the poetic start from the previous track. a beautifully haunting & unforgettable release, all in all.
give this track a listen please:

further digging has led me to discover that duppi also makes a small appearance in this compilation album, ego 02 / critical species - individual music ozaka 1985. her track, "hareluya + daiyamond" is a collaboration with none other than haco! it also begs the question, is duppi originally from osaka? i can't find any information about where she is based (or any personal info for that matter), but being featured in a comp album that showcases acts from osaka and signed on a label from osaka tells me otherwise.
oh, and give this track a listen too:
(above for dl)
and more importantly, if you love this album, why not purchase the physical thing?
(good luck though, i've been trying to get my hands on this release for years at a decent price ..)
currently listening to: duppi - "ไธ‰ๅƒใฎๅคœ (velvet night)"
